Nancy Larraine Hoffmann was elected to the New York State Senate in November 1984 in an upset victory which marked a milestone break from the "Good Old Boys" tradition. Senator Hoffmann was elected in a low-budget, grass-roots campaign. She previously served three terms on the Syracuse Common Council where she chaired the Finance Committee.

Senator Hoffmann was elected as a Democrat, and later changed parties in December of l998 to become a member of the Republican Senate Majority. Her long career was marked by a determined effort to reform the legislative process.

In 2004 Senator Hoffmann was challenged in a primary by a far-right organization which financed an opponent who waged a highly negative campaign. Senator Hoffmann defeated the Republican challenger, who remained on the ballot on the Conservative and Independence lines. In the general election those lines drained enough votes to allow the Democratic candidate a narrow victory.
